After a traumatic event during his residency, young medical student James Hayman (Namir Smallwood) is transferred to a rural hospital to start over. Noticing that James is having difficulty communicating with patients, Dr. Harrison (veteran stage and film actor Michael Potts) suggests he enroll in a course on bedside manners and building deeper relationships with patients. When James finds himself involved with a young asthmatic patient (Sidney Flanigan, never a rarity), demons from his past begin to haunt him. His connection to reality begins to fray as his disturbing nightmares, anxiety-inducing assumptions, and physical injuries collide with the harsh realities of the medical world. Director Alex Thompson, in this humane and unconventional take on the genre, the successor to his SAINT FRANCES and predecessor to GHOSTLIGHT, assembles a strong ensemble of veteran character actors.
