A Montana ranching family faces off against other people encroaching on their land. Forrie J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, is an expert in the world of rodeo. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and revert to his regular Southern California voice. Featured on WatchMojo: 10 Best Summer TV Shows You’re Under the Radar (2018) (Review only for the first two seasons) I came into this show not expecting to like it, but the story, acting, and cinematography are excellent. It’s basically Montana mob wars with the occasional giant dose of testosterone (cowboys with guns on horses while fishing). Costner is a masterful actor in the lead role of the Duttons. The show is at its best when it shows the moves on the chessboard involving the Duttons and their enemies. The show stops at the beginning of the second season, but picks up again halfway through. Kelsey Asbille is the weakest link in the role of Monica and gives a very weak performance, the plot falls apart and the acting is not up to par. I think Cole Hauser as Rip may be the strongest actor (excluding Costner himself) and I looked forward to every scene Rip was in. Thomas Rainwater is also great. The story is vibrant and the scenery is beautiful. Just as Cormac McCarthy’s All The Pretty Horses was a bit more raw and brutal than the title suggests, this series has a similar style. Highly recommended and I wish I had waited so long to see it.
